Here in Manchester

HERE

JIM HOLLANDS

3rd December 08 – 31st January 09

Bureau presents Here by Jim Hollands; a hallucinogenic dissolution between the screen and the viewer forming a radical new art agenda for the 21st century.

Here is a seventy-minute remix of a rarely seen existing work written by Joe Orton, called ‘The Erpingham Camp’. Originally screened on TV in 1966, it has been experimentally remixed in sound, image and words, with subtitles, and partly in anaglyphic (red/cyan) 3D. Large parts of the work operate under flicker frequencies of 8-13hz, and as such are viewable by epileptics or those prone to seizure at their own risk.

Called 'one of the most important new videos to be made in the UK in recent years' by Ian White, film curator at the Whitechapel, London, its psychic 3D odyssey erases and re-inscribes Orton’s play with a viral anti-narrative. Here transposes modern life into a structure, drawn as much from the cut-ups of William Burroughs, as it is from the psycho-social machinations of the internet, and by doing so becomes video as radical communication.

Jim Hollands is an artist working across film, sound and performance. He was the resident curator of a major avant-garde centre in London, The Horse Hospital, between 2000-2006, and is a member of the experimental sound group, Patricide.

LISTINGS INFORMATION

Exhibition: Here
Please note: The film Here is 70 minutes long and will screen at 12.30pm, 2pm and 3.30pm daily, during the gallery opening hours. 3D glasses and refreshments will be provided.

Artist: Jim Hollands

Exhibition Dates: 3rd December 2008 – 31st January 2009

The gallery will be closed for Christmas & New Year as of 21st December 2008 to 14th January 2009.

Venue: Bureau, Ground Floor, Islington Mill, James Street, Salford / Manchester. M3 5HW
Email: info@bureaugallery.com
Website: www.bureaugallery.com

For further information about Jim Hollands: http://here.chantdownbabylon.com

Gallery Opening Times: Wednesday to Saturday 12 - 5pm
Admission: Free. Fully Accessible.

A live performance by Patricide (Jim Hollands, Aryan Darzi and GazCloud) will take place alongside the exhibition in late January. Details to be confirmed. Please visit the Bureau website for information.

For further information & images please contact Bureau at: press@bureaugallery.com

if mutton is a female lamb that had never had children, and one eats it, it's full of oestrogen, right? Had anyone here ever eaten real mutton? It fucking spaces you out like a motherfucker. Is that what oestrogen does? And, in which case, would there be a male meat equivalent? A meat full of testosterone? Or is that what one of one eats meat eats all the time?

Inside Your Mind

" and if I really wanted to get inside your mind?"
( voiceover, heavy on reverb, reminiscent of Grecian 200 adverts )
"Well, tonight, you'd go home, and fall asleep, and dream of characters materialising, laid out one by one, like scribbles forming pictures of people, positioned like buffers on a pinball machine, and the next day you'd write in your journal
"Do you know what I'd do if I really wanted to get inside your mind?"

I don't dream of sheep, I dream of dreams
Eurrgh, my dreams are meta-memes.

RIP Silas1

Silas, my laptop, died last week. It wasn't a quick death. I had been researching Markov Chaney from the Illuminatus trilogy and came upon the work of Karl Koch, the computer programmer who is cited as having invented the trojan horse virus. He was a coke head who went under the name of Hagbard Celine and was eventally found suicided under mysterious circumstances. Weirdly, a biography of him was written by a guy called Markoff.

Anyway, I'm doing all of this and videoing myself doing it and suddenly this thing comes up on the screen that says "You are not a member of any group that you have access privileges for" and I think uh-oh and two days later Silas' hardrive collapsed. It was like watching something eating itself, he was groaning and making the worst noises and eventually now just won't switch on at all.

Question is, when I replace his hardrive, will he still be Silas? Or will I have to rename him 'Fuckup'?
Will he even like me? What if we don't get on?

Anyway, I won't be online for a while, and email is difficult, so have fun out there, cyberbytes. And don't look up Markov Chaney, cos it's real and he's alive.

Tune of the week

For everyone not keeping up with the musical yout, the finest crew to come out of the grime scene are Ruff Sqwad, and they have a new mixtape ( Guns N Roses 2 ) out next week, I'd highly recommend it. There's been alot of breakdowns recently into exactly how much guys like this are earning ( no record industry input, having to produce mixtapes - which sell for around 7UKP as opposed to 'normal' Cd prices - with over 20 tracks as opposed to 12 -, producing their own videos etc ), I'll be buyin it just to give them so more dosh.

Here's one of their singles, Anna,

http://www.sendspace.com/file/12nhnd

For more details see

http://www.myspace.com/ruffsqwad

All Help Eris!

Robert Anton Wilson Needs Our Help

( all words from http://www.rushkoff.com/2006/10/robert-anton-wilson-needs-our-help.php )

I hope people I've inspired with my work would band together to help me out in my later years if I needed it. Which is at least part of the reason why I'm sending what I can to support cosmic thinking patriarch Robert Anton Wilson, whose infirmity and depleted finances have put him in the precarious position of not being able to meet next month's rent.

In case the name doesn't immediately ring a bell, Bob is the guy who wrote Cosmic Trigger - still the best narrative on how to enter and navigate the psycho-spiritual realm, and co-wrote the Illuminatus Trilogy, an epic work that pushes beyond conspiracy theory into conspiracy practice. Robert Anton Wilson will one day be remembered alongside such literary philosophers as Aldous Huxley and James Joyce.

But right now, Bob is a human being in a rather painful fleshsuit, who needs our help. I refuse for the history books to say he died alone and destitute, for I want future generations to know we appreciated Robert Anton Wilson while he was alive.

Let me add, on a personal note, that Bob is the only one of my heroes who I was not disappointed to actually meet in person. He was of tremendous support to me along my road, and I'm honored to have the opportunity to be of some support on his.

Any donations can be made to Bob directly to the Paypal account olgaceline@gmail.com.
You can also send a check payable to Robert Anton Wilson to
Dennis Berry c/o Futique Trust
P.O. Box 3561
Santa Cruz, CA 95063.

http://www.rushkoff.com/2006/10/robert-anton-wilson-needs-our-help.php
